Description
Responsible for the mechanical design and engineering of pointing (gimbal) and imaging systems (payload options) for use with fix and rotor wing, land, and sea going craft. Functions include static, dynamic, thermal dynamics, analysis and documentation of parts and sub-systems in a mil-qualified optical, mechanical, electrical system.
Must be an experienced user of SolidWorks CAD and FEA simulations tools to optimize designs. Provides analysis in support of load path calculations for safety of flight certifications. Designs payload balance (static and dynamic). Manages product weight and optimizes designs to meet both structural and weight requirements. Maintains system power budget and provides thermal analysis and design solutions to meet operational temperature requirements. Conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs capable of conducting both vibration and thermal testing, providing complete reports of results. Demonstrated successful design of kinematic and dynamics for optical-mechanical assemblies with precision mounting, adjustment, and switching of optical elements. Conducts and directs support personnel in the preparation of detailed design documentation, design testing and prototype fabrication. Must be proficient in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance and engineering documentation practices from ASME Y14.XX.
Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent in a mechanical or engineering environment or a combination of education and experience. Six plus years of experience in a design and manufacturing environment. Advanced knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts and practices utilized in military qualified design and manufacturing environment. General working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
Working knowledge of ANSI/ASME drafting standards.
Excellent mathematical skills.
Excellent communication skills and detail oriented.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
DASYLab Data Acquisition, control and Analysis Software Failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA)
Design for Manufacturing (DFM),
Scientific writing using Introduction, Method, Results, Discussion (IMRad)
Functional knowledge of and experience using the following tools to validate design functionally and system characterization is desirable.
Optical alignment devices such as autocollimators visible and laser,
Interferometers to evaluate mechanical mounting affect of optical surfaces,
Accelerometers and data acquisitions system to characterize system resonances and transfer functions,
Other equipment such as thermal chambers, vibration tables, thermocouples, oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, etc.
